Refrigerators and Freezers
When looking to buy any large appliance used from classified ads, you will have to measure spaces beforehand, discuss pick up versus delivery, and you will likely want to see the appliance in person before making that transaction final. Here, we are going to focus on how to go about purchasing a used refrigerator for sale or a used freezer for sale.
Refrigerators generally come in black, white, almond, or stainless steel. You will have to think about how important the color is to you, and if you feel the need to match the fridge to your cabinets and kitchen décor. Some refrigerators are "built in," meaning that they can actually look as if the refrigerator was built into the kitchen, not unlike a built in wall oven. These types of refrigerators for sale can vary extensively in terms of size, so particularly when buying used you would want to take careful measurements to ensure everything fits correctly. With the exception of the built-in model, you will want to typically leave an inch of clearance space on all sides of the fridge.
In addition to the built-in type, there are four main kinds of refrigerator models: Top mount, bottom mount, side-by-side, and French doors. Top mount refrigerators for sale are the most common and often can utilize the most space - these are the typical refrigerators with the freezer on the top. Bottom mount refrigerators for sale have become more popular in recent years, and these units are constructed with the freezer at the bottom, which some find more convenient.
Side-by-side refrigerators for sale have two doors that open in the middle, with the freezer on one side and the fridge on the other. Although these can be more aesthetically pleasing, and many come equipped with a water filter, you are essentially compromising some freezer space; you won't be able to put a huge frozen turkey in this narrow freezer. French door units essentially combine the side-by-side design with the bottom mount style - two doors open for refrigerator space in the middle, in addition to shelf space on either door, and then the freezer is located on the bottom.
When it comes to refrigerators, there can be many options and perks. However, as with other items, you do not want to purchase something bigger or more complex than you need. Let us examine some of the extra features that may come available with a used refrigerator for sale so that you can prioritize what is most important to you.
Some extra perks in refrigerators to consider: clear or glass shelves and bins, so that you can always see what food you have inside; adjustable shelves for increased flexibility; extra wide shelves; vegetable crispers and/or meat compartments that have their own adjustable temperature controls; spill-proof shelves; extra lighting; a water filter and an icemaker.
When seeing the used refrigerator for sale in person, of course you will want to check out those special features mentioned above if they're advertised with the sale. Otherwise, another thing to asses is if the seals are solid. A simple way to test for an appropriate seal is to put a piece of paper between the door and fridge –- if you can pull it out easily the seal may not be strong enough. Make sure the drawers and shelves look in decent condition, and also check out the temperature settings. Also, notice which way the door opens, if that is an important consideration for you - depending on the model, this may or may not be able to be reversed.
It probably goes without saying, but you will want to take note of the brand name. Reputable brand names to stick with in refrigerators are Samsung, Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, LG, and GE.
Before moving onto used freezers for sale, let us just briefly touch upon two other types of refrigerators for sale you may be looking into: mini refrigerators, and wine cooler refrigerators.
Mini fridges are ideal for dorm rooms, although do confirm with the college that they do indeed allow them in the rooms before purchasing. There are two main types of mini fridges - one with a separate freezer compartment, and one with the freezer built into the refrigerator section. Mini fridges can have inconsistent temperatures, and consequently they should be used primarily for storing beverages, and not meats or something that really requires a consistently cold temperature.
Wine cooler refrigerators for sale are (obviously) excellent for wine enthusiasts, and can make great gifts. Unfortunately they can sometimes be on the pricier side, but then again that is exactly why shopping used through our classified ads is so beneficial. Wine fridges can hold twenty or more wine bottles - some models hold over 50 bottles. Most wine fridges are built with separate areas for white and red wines.
Moving onto freezers - there are two main types of freezers available: chest freezers for sale and upright freezers for sale. Chest freezers appropriately look like a large chest and have excellent storage space. Upright freezers have less storage space, but they also take up less space in your home. Upright freezers have shelves and compartments similar to a refrigerator. Both kinds of freezers come in four sizes: compact, small, medium, and large.
Most freezers are able to keep food safely frozen for 24 hours, particularly if it is full, which is an excellent advantage to have during a power outage. Also, with the local food movement having taken off in recent years, more and more people are purchasing locally grown, healthy fruits, vegetables, and meats, all of which can be frozen - that way, you can enjoy locally grown produce and other foods all year long. Indeed, they are many advantages to owning a freezer in addition to the one that comes with your fridge, and the main benefit in addition to preserving locally grown foods and their nutrients, is that you can end up saving money and time by cooking foods in bulk and freezing some for later.
Like refrigerators, freezers can come equipped with little "extras" that you will have to decide if it is worth paying a little bit more for or not. Freezers can come available with an alarm, a door lock, interior lights, or a soft freeze section. If you are unsure about what features a used freezer for sale consists of, do not hesitate to ask the seller. And, when it comes to brand names to stick with, they are the same as with refrigerators, but also include Haier.
