    Small Caged Animals

Small caged animals are great first pets for children, or indeed for anyone. Small caged animals for sale here at Want Ad Digest primarily consist of gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs, which is what we are focusing on here. However, other small caged animals include rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, rats, and mice.

Most small caged animals for sale need an appropriately sized cage in addition to bedding in the form of wood shavings. Generally speaking, the cage should be fairly easy to clean, secure so that your pet cannot escape, and it should be placed in an ideal spot with an even temperature - do not place cages by windows for that exact reason: wind and sun can cause temperature changes that may stress our little friends out.

Below, we give a run down on information regarding gerbils for sale, hamsters for sale, and guinea pigs for sale, in addition to further helpful links at the bottom of the page:

    Gerbils

    • Can live for two to four years

    • Have little odor, are easy to care for, and are a great first pets for kids

    • Need fruits and vegetables in addition to a seed mix

    • Need a "nest box" in the cage that they can hide in

    • They have a tail while hamsters do not - never pick them up by the tail

    Hamsters

    • Can live for one to five years

    • Are nocturnal animals, so it may help to own one if you happen to be a "night owl" - although they are awake for periods during the day

    • Do not try to alter their sleep pattern or you can stress them out

    • Place their cage in a fairly dark and quiet area

    • An exercise wheel is a must

    • Something to chew on is a must because their teeth grow constantly and need to be warn down - hard dog biscuits can be used

    Guinea pigs

    • Can live for four to eight years

    • Make sure that the cage is big enough to accommodate them, particularly if you have more than one

    • Guinea pigs are generally happier when they have a playmate or two

    • Use Timothy Hay, not Alfalfa Hay, unless the guinea pig is pregnant

    • Their nails need to be trimmed every four to six weeks

    • They need variety in their food, including some vegetables and fruits in addition to guinea pig food

    • Longer haired versions need to be brushed daily
